The Blank Database Template is a framework for rapid application development in Microsoft Access.
It includes user level security, Main and Report menus, Setup form for global settings, Combo form
for simple one or two field tables, Data Integrity form to spot and fix inconsistent data and a
User form. You can force users out of database with a warning within three
minutes for maintenance or to backup and compact the database. New users can create an HTML data dictionary and
create the shortcut on their desktop simply by clicking on the database. You can change the link to
other table databases. This lets you have a database for training, archives or an offline database for your
laptop in a different location than your networked production database. This feature also lets you peek into
a backup before you restore it. When a user changes a password, it is synchronized across the network so they
can log into the database from any PC. Updates are automatically offered without an administratior having
to install them on each user's PC. The program has powerful tools to find and select records without making
users learn SQL.
By using this framework and copying modifying single record forms, continuous forms and reports, Agee Software
is able to create a complete custom built application in a fraction of the time taken by other developers.
The Main menu shows the version number of the database. Click on the version number to see where tables
are linked and other troubleshooting and contact information. Buttons have underlined hotkeys so Alt-R
opens the Report form like clicking the Report button. Alt-Z from the main menu lets a super user make
programmed table structure changes without having a developer log onto their network. Only one user has
to make these changes.
Updates are normally performed by sending a link to you via email with a summary of the changes.
Follow the link and unzip the file onto your server in the same folder where your data tables are located.
Double click on the database to create a shortcut. A super user should then run the new version on the server.
Answer Yes when asked if you want to tell others the new version is available. When other users log into
the database, they will be offered the new version. If they answer Yes, the database will close and they
can reopen the database in about 20 seconds when the copy operation is complete. This update process also
distributes the MDW file, where encrypted user accounts are stored, so any user can log in from any PC.
Installation of the database is easy. Make a c:\work folder on the user's PC, map the drive letter to the server,
and copy two files, blank.mdb and blank_.mdw to c:\work. Double click on blank.mdb to create a shortcut on the
desktop. Of course, the user must have Access installed and a valid userid in the database.
To customize the shortcut to a specific user, right-click and select Properties. Change user in
the far right of the Target to the user's userid. You may need to
enable macros to avoid security warnings.
